Why Local Currency?

A local currency draws attention to, and provides real support for, our local economy and the unique goods and services it provides. This boost to local commerce safeguards jobs, keeps our favorite businesses thriving, promotes the production of local goods and services, and shields local culture from the infiltration of big-box stores and “Generic Americana.”

The benefits of the PLENTY extend beyond the economy, as well. The local economic model promoted by the PLENTY affords greater use of recycled materials, locally available material, and renewable resources. Decreasing the distance between producers and consumers reduces the need for long-range transportation and the resulting pollution. Keeping our downtown businesses and local markets vibrant preserves the option of walking, cycling, and busing to nearby stores. The PLENTY makes small-scale production viable, simultaneously protecting our local culture and global environment.

Perhaps most importantly, the PLENTY fosters community. Members seek each other out, meet face-to-face, and get to know their neighbors. The PLENTY allows the “small town values” of neighborliness, generosity, and self-reliance to blend with our community’s traditional support for diversity, social justice, and responsible development.

NCPlenty expects universal local acceptance of the PLENTY within 10 years. This will mean that most local businesses accept at least partial payment in PLENTYs, and that plentiful local options exist for the goods and services needed in our community. Universal local acceptance of the PLENTY will also show that we have reclaimed control of our local economy by “voting” with our PLENTYs (and our dollars).

If you want to get involved, please see our Lend a Hand page. For other questions about NCPlenty and the PLENTY local currency, please see out our FAQ or send us an email at ncplenty@ncplenty.org.
